January might be the bowl season and playoffs for football, but for high school sports it belongs to basketball.
Boys and girls teams are playing three and even four games a week before the regular league season ends in the second week of February.
It's been an up and down season for several squads this year.
The Sherman County Huskies boys team (10-4 Overall, 6-0 league) is looking sharp. Tuesday night's game at South Wasco County (14-3 Overall, 6-1 League) will pit the leagues top teams against each other – the game is after press time but we'll provide an update next week.
Condon is holding on to fourth place in the Big Sky League and faced Trout Lake on Tuesday and Klickitat/Glenwood on Friday. The team will cap it's season in a home game on Valentine's Day against Ione/Arlington in Condon.
The Wheeler County Rattlers team (5-9 Overall, 1-5 League), a combined team of Mitchell, Spray, and Wheeler High School, has struggled this season but is looking to rebound in the final weeks of league play.
The Rattlers will head to Dufur on Friday and will host Central Christian in non-league play at Mitchell High School on Saturday, January 25. The Rattlers then will play in Condon on February 4.
It's also been a up and down season for the Ione/Arlington boys team (5-10 Overall, 1-3 League). The Cardinals will face Condon on January 28, Wheeler County on January 31, and Sherman on February 7.
In girls basketball, South Wasco County (11-5 Overall, 5-1 League) and Trout Lake (9-2 Overall, 4-0 League) are fighting for the top spot in the Big Sky League, but the Wheeler County squad (8-6 Overall, 3-2 League) is knocking and as of press time, sits at 4th place in the Big Sky.
Sherman County (4-8 Overall, 2-2) is not far behind, currently sitting in fifth place.
The Wheeler Rattlers will play at Dufur this Friday, before hosting non-league opponent Central Christian on Saturday. The Rattlers will then face off against Sherman County for a rematch of the January 14 game, which the Rattlers won by four points.
Condon snapped four game losing streak last Saturday, beating Horizon Christian 39-31. The Blue Devils will travel to three consecutive games this week against Trout Lake, Ione/Arlington, and Sherman County before hosting Wheeler County on February 4.
