In the Condon Blue Devil home basketball game opener, the Devils downed the Wallowa Cougars 49-40. The tip off went to Condon player Wyatt Johnson who easily laid in the first points of the game. An energized Devil team showed great defense in the key with the triple threat of Blake Carnine, Brodie Bass and Carson Greenwood using their collective height to keep the Cougars from getting a second try under the basket. A slight lead of 12-9 was held by the Devils at the end of the first quarter.
Even scoring from all players led by Johnson spurring the fast pace, showed the Devils with a double-digit lead in the second quarter. Steals and blocked shots by the Devils helped fuel the 25-15 score at halftime. Wallowa was led by guard Gabe Nobles and center Isaac Barnum.
After the half, Condon's Carnine found his mark in the key, maneuvering around the Wallowa big man. Johnson also added to the point spread with his unhesitating play at the basket and rebounding. Foul trouble by the Devils in the 3rd gave opportunity to the Cougars to advance with free throws, on which they capitalized. The 3rd quarter ended with the Devils ahead 41-28.
In the fourth period fatigue began to set in for both teams and turnovers and fouls plagued both teams. However a strong lead with 3:37 left in the quarter, Coach Tanner McIntosh sent in the bench who closed out the win 49-40.
