DevilDawgs end historic season with loss to Crosspoint Christian
The DevilDawgs traveled to Klamath Falls to face off against the 2nd ranked Crosspoint Christian Warriors. Coming into the game Crosspoint Christian's only blemish was a loss to North Douglas in week 8.
Crosspoint won the opening toss and chose to receive the ball. The DevilDawgs attempted an onside kick which was recovered by the Warriors. The Warriors kept the ball on the ground getting good gains on sweeps, dives and especially running counters. The Warriors scored and scored their 2-point conversion. The Warriors took a page from the DevilDawgs playback and attempted an onside kick–DevilDawgs recovered.
On the first play Jayden Havins beat the defense to the sideline, cut upfield and found the endzone. Unfortunately there was a flag on the play and the run came back. The DevilDawgs began feeding the ball up the middle to Michael Blagg who was more than a little difficult to tackle. A big run off of a dive by Josh Ward got the ball inside the 10-yard line. The Warriors stuffed the next two runs before Gage Simpson (in at quarterback for Gabe Fritts who was out with blood on his uniform) found the endzone on a quarterback draw. The DevilDawgs 2-point conversion was no good.
After an attempted onside kick attempt by the DevilDawgs, the Warriors completed a pass on their first play of the drive and the DevilDawgs weren't able to bring the receiver down. After a Warriors 2-point conversion the DevilDawgs trailed 6-16 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Warriors would continue to catch several breaks. A touchdown Run by Michael Blagg was called back because of a flag, as was a touchdown run by Jayden Havins. The Warriors recovered a DevilDawg fumble which started a scoring drive and then with the DevilDawgs driving a miscommunication in the backfield allowed the Warriors to intercept a pitch and run the ball back for another unanswered touchdown. As The 1st half was coming to a close the DevilDawgs were driving, with little time left Gage Simpson (in at quarterback for am injured Gabe Fritts) pitched the ball to Michael Blagg who looked to complete a pass–no one was open downfield. Blagg scrambled and took off before being tackled just short Of the goal line as time expires. At halftime the DevilDawgs trailed by 28.
Crosspoint attempted an onside kick to start the 2nd half–DevilDawgs recovered. Runs by Josh Ward, Michael Blagg, Jayden Havins, and a scramble by Gage Simpson, set up a Simpson pass to Blake Carnine for a touchdown. Simpson scrambled into the endzone for the 2-point conversion as well. With 8:30 left in the third quarter the DevilDawgs kicked onside and when the dust settled Blake Carnine had control of the ball. The DevilDawgs were unable to score on the following drive, when Crosspoint took over on downs they broke several tackles before getting brought down on the 3-yard line settling up a touchdown pass and successful 2-point conversion.
On the first play of the DevilDawg drive, center Brodie Bass took on two Warrior defenders giving Gabe Simpson enough time to complete a pass to Isaiah Riggs for a touchdown. DevilDawgs kick onside, and it doesn't go the required 10 yards before Simpson recovers the ball. Fortunately a Warrior touched the ball first: DevilDawgs ball. Facing a 4th and long, Simpson completed a pass to Havins who broke one tackle and made another defender miss a tackle, getting the 1st down on the 47 yard line. A hand-off to Michael Blagg on the following play and Blagg could not be tackled. With 1:47 remaining in the 3rd quarter the DevilDawgs are only behind by 16.
The DevilDawgs line up again to kick onside and for the third time in a row recover–this time it was Drake Dark who came up with the ball. The Warriors would intercept a pass to end the DevilDawgs drive and score on their own drive giving them a 32 point lead.
The DevilDawgs would score two more touchdowns, one by Michael Blagg on the first play of their drive, and finally Jayden Havins would run for over 95 yards for a touchdown on the final DevilDawg drive. Gabe Fritts would reenter the game for the final 2-point conversion attempt and complete a pass for the final score.
The Warriors would finish the game in victory formation taking a knee. All 7 of the DevilDawg seniors were on the field for the final plays. Michael Blagg (#13), Isaiah Riggs (#4), Gabe Fritts (#82), Josh Ward (#42), Blake Carnine (#20), Jayden Havins (#22), and Brodie Bass (#70). They were joined by junior Caiden Walker (#33).
The DevilDawgs finished their year 6-5 after being 1-3 early in the season. All of the losses were to teams who made the state quarterfinals. This was the first time the DevilDawgs have had made the playoffs, and on top of that win a playoff game in the history of the co-op The DevilDawgs will celebrate their season at their awards banquet Sunday November 24th at 2:00 PM. The banquet will be held at the Grass Valley pavilion.
