Senior night success propels DevilDawgs to playoffs

The Sherman Co./Condon DevilDawgs football team closed out the regular season with their final home game of the season against the Cougars from Lyle and Wishram.

Prior to the game the seven seniors from both Sherman County School and Condon High School were honored with their families: Michael Blagg (Sherman), Isaiah Riggs (Sherman), Blake Carnine (Condon), Jayden Havins (Condon), Josh Ward (Sherman), Brodie Bass (Condon), and Gabe Fritts (Sherman). All seniors were given a candy necklace, blanket, and gave their families flowers (all of which were provided by the Sherman boosters and Condon parents) before they took their home field for the final time.

The DevilDawgs opened up with a scoring drive capped off with a 29-yard run from Jayden Havins. A failed 2-point conversion pass gave the DevilDawgs a 6-0 lead. The following onside kick attempt took a great bounce going over the head of three different Cougars before Jayden Havins fell on it inches before the ball rolled out of bounds. Unfortunately the DevilDawgs were not able to convert the break into points. The Cougars picked off an errant pass on the first play of the drive.

Poor choices and mistakes by the DevilDawgs early kept the Cougars drive alive which ended in a Cougar touchdown and successful 2-point conversion giving the Cougars the lead.

The DevilDawg fullbacks (Michael Blagg and Josh Ward)-behind the offensive line of Brodie Bass (senior), Caiden Walker (junior), and Cruz Colby (freshman)-were too much for the Cougar defense. Early in the game both Blagg and Ward were able to get yards in chunks up the middle, consistently gaining five or more yards a carry before Jayden Havins broke a big run and found the end-zone. An unsuccessful 2-point conversion attempt and the score is DevilDawgs 12, Cougars 8.

The Cougars were not ready to give up yet. On their following drive the Cougars scored on a quarterback run from an empty backfield for the third lead change of the first quarter. The lead would change again soon when DevilDawg quarterback Gabe Fritts scored on an option run. The DevilDawg defense would force the Cougars to turn the ball over on downs with 1:34 remaining in the half which was enough time for the DevilDawgs to mount one more scoring drive when Jayden Havins would break loose and have a huge run. At the end of the first half the DevilDawgs had found the end zone four times (and had four failed 2-point conversions), compared to the Cougars two scores and one successful conversion.

Down by ten to start the 2nd half the Cougars were forced to punt on their first drive. Unfortunately the DevilDawgs were unable to capitalize. The DevilDawgs fumbled the ball on the first play-Cougars recovered, drive down and score. Cougars now only trail by four (24-20). A deep Cougar kick and no return by the DevilDawgs set up a first down for the DevilDawgs on their own seven yard line. The DevilDawgs fumbled the snap-Cougars recovered. The Cougars who were trailing by ten at the half now lead by two (24-26) with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter.

After the two quick Cougar scores the DevilDawgs regrouped and their defense quickly took over. Michael Blagg put pressure on the quarterback forcing a hurried throw that Jayden Havins picked off and ran back for a defensive touchdown. Gabe Fritts scored the 2-point conversion on a quarterback keeper. Again the DevilDawg defense forced a Cougar punt. Michael Blagg, Josh Ward, and Jayden Havins continued to attack the Cougar defense averaging 12, 4, and 13 yards per carry respectively before Michael Blagg scored a touchdown. Jayden Havins scored the 2-point conversion. The DevilDawgs would force another turnover on downs before getting the ball back. On the first play of the drive. Michael Blagg got the ball on a dive, and from the DevilDawg 16-yard line ran the ball 84 yards for the final DevilDawg touchdown.

What started as a back and forth nail biter ended in a 20 point Sherman/Condon victory. Next up is the first round of the playoffs. The 10th ranked DevilDawgs will travel to 7th ranked Mohawk Mustangs for a Friday night game. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM. Sounds like a great excuse to take an afternoon off, grab a friend and make a road trip to cheer on your favorite football team.
