Pendleton, OR - The Condon and Heppner combined cross-country team proved their grit last Friday at the 1A/2A boys and 1A/2A/3A girls district meet in Pendleton.
The course was soaked by relentless rain leading up to race day, though the skies cleared just in time for the runners to take to the muddy, slick trails.
In the boys' 1A/2A varsity race, Jake Wilson of Condon earned an individual spot at the State Championship with a strong fourth-place finish, clocking in at 17:21.2. Wilson's time was among the top seven individual placements needed to qualify, securing his place among Oregon's best. Wilson was one of 79 athletes competing in the race, making his achievement even more impressive.
Kaden Hall and Walker Lathrop also represented Condon in the boys' race, placing 39th and 47th, respectively, with times of 20:18.4 and 20:47.9. Despite challenging conditions, they showed strong performances, contributing to the team's overall effort.
On the girls' side, the combined team earned an at-large bid to State, which means all of their runners will get to compete. The team includes Lily Nichols, Riley Archer, Brooklyn Hendricks, Hailey McDaniel, Laia Puelles, and Kadie Henrichs, who will all take on the state's best teams this Saturday.
The Oregon State Cross Country Championships will be held at Lane Community College in Eugene on Saturday, November 9th. The competition will start with the 1A/2A boys' race at 10 a.m., where Wilson will take his shot at a top state finish.
