Sir,
I am writing to strongly advocate for keeping the stop sign at the intersection of E. Spring and S. Jefferson streets in the old ball field neighborhood. As a resident of this area, I have witnessed firsthand the increasing traffic concerns at this intersection, which pose a significant safety risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
Reasons for Concern:
• High Traffic Volume: Both streets experience high traffic volume, particularly those that avoid going through town on main street from HWY 19 to continue onto HWY 206, and (vice versa) frequently creating dangerous situations where vehicles often fail to yield properly.
• Poor Design: Due to the layout of the intersection, E. Spring Street is not as wide on the old side as it is on the new side. This creates near head on accidents because when you're on the edge on the old road it puts you kind of center on the new road.
• High Rate of Near-Misses: We have witnessed countless near-miss accidents that have occurred at this intersection, highlighting the need for improved traffic control. People speeding across the intersection more so now that the road has been paved. On a nearly daily basis we would hear the screeching of tires as people realized either direction is required to stop and both directions fail to yield before the stop sign was put in.
Benefits of the Stop Sign:
• Enhanced Safety: A stop sign significantly reduces the risk of collisions by requiring drivers to come to a complete stop, allowing for safer merging and crossing.
• Pedestrian Protection: This would significantly improve pedestrian safety, especially for children who frequently use these roads to walk to the schools (the grade school, high school and the early learning center) and residents out for daily exercise. Also now that twelve more residences are being added to this one block area people, car count, and traffic will double at this intersection.
• Traffic Flow Regulation: By enforcing a pause at the intersection, a stop sign would help manage traffic flow and minimize unnecessary evasive actions to avoid accidents.
Request for Action: We respectfully request that the City Council consider our concerns and initiate the process of keeping a stop sign at this critical intersection. We are also available to provide additional information or discuss this matter further if needed.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Robert & Carrie Scott
