Volleyball squads prep for District Tournament this Saturday

Wheeler Co. earns #1 Seed, Ione/Arlington and Sherman still in the mix

The Wheeler Co. Rattlers Volleyball Team has earned a number-one seed for the Big Sky East Division and will head into the district tournament this week as a team to beat.

The Rattlers will get a bye after finishing the season at 20-3 overall, and 11-2 in league play.

The Rattlers, a combined team of the Wheeler County schools of Spray High School, Mitchell High School, and Wheeler High School (Fossil), are ranked as the 18th best team in the state by OSAA.

The Rattlers have lost only sixteen matches this season, the second fewest in the state behind Powers High School.

Coach Crystal Rey says that she is incredibly proud of the team.

"They have had tremendous growth this year, as a team and individually. The hard work they've put in and the mentality for taking on each game, playing the best they can play, has shown the growth of this team."

The Arlington/Ione Cardinals are the #2 Seed from the Big Sky East, and are looking to advance from the first round, taking on Lyle/Wishram to open the tournament at 9 AM in The Dalles. With a win, the Cardinals will face South Wasco County at 10 AM.

The Sherman County Huskies also finished the season strong. After losing four consecutive matches in early October, the team rallied and stunned South Wasco County on October 19.

The Huskies will face the Dufur Rangers in the first round of the Big Sky District Tournament on October 23 at The Dalles High School. The winner will face Wheeler County in the Semi-Finals in Saturday.

With just a 20 minute break, the winner of the semi-finals will face off in the Big Sky District Championship match.
