Huskies hook the Redsides

The Sherman Huskies hosted a four-way district volleyball match on Saturday, October 19th. The Wheeler County Rattlers, the Klickwood Eagles, and the South Wasco County Rattlers all came to Moro to finish up Big Sky district play.

Sherman opened play facing Klickwood, who took the first set before Sherman won the next three sets.

In the next game, Wheeler County defeated Klickwood in straight sets before losing to South Wasco County in straight sets.

The most electric game of the day came when South Wasco County and Sherman County faced off in the final match. Sherman County has not defeated South Wasco County in several years. The Huskies won the first set 28-26, which got the hometown crowd and Husky bench fired up.

The Huskies fed off the emotion and atmosphere jumping out to an early lead thanks especially to Sherman's two middle blockers Addison Smith and Kaileigh Kopczynski. The Huskies would win the 2nd set 25-10. With the momentum on their side the Huskies were able to sweep the Redsides and win the third and final set 25-20.

Sherman coach Caitlin Cruickshank praised the Redsides.

"Maupin is a well coached team and has been very successful over the years." She was especially complimentary of their hitters. "They have several girls who can really hit the ball."

Luckily for the Huskies they have girls who can block. "Our team are big blockers and [today] we shot down their attacks. I told my two middles [middle blockers] that their job was to shot them down at the net, and they did their job while we continued to pound the ball at them."

Cruickshank praised all of her players. "Emma Goodenough had several blocks, as well. Allison Rolfe-all 5'4" of her-even had a single block. Kiara Peters hit really well at the net, Bailey Coelsch had amazing passes-all to target-and was deadly at the line. Allison, Kaileigh, and Taylor all had some amazing saves as well."

Possibly the highlight of the day was the way that the Huskies pulled together, supported each other and worked together. "They all played their hearts out and relaly pulled together as a team."

Next up for the Huskies is the play in game for the league tournament. The Huskies who are third in the East of the Big Sky (behind 2nd place Ione/Arlington, and 1st place Wheeler county) will travel to Dufur Oregon who are 2nd in the Big Sky West (behind 1st place South Wasco County and ahead of third place Lyle Wishram). Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM Wednesday October 23rd. The winner will advance to the district tournament on Saturday.
