The Sherman/Condon DevilDawgs took the field last Friday night when the Pirates of Perrydale came to Moro for a 7:00 PM kickoff. The DevilDawgs received the opening kick. Raul Anaya was set up deep to return and gained 15 yards before being brought down by the Pirates. A few plays later Jayden Havins had a big run setting up a touchdown pass from Gabe Fritts to Blake Carnine. Havins would run the ball in for the 2-point conversion.
The swarming DevilDawg defense forced the Panthers to turn the ball over on downs giving the ball back to the DevilDawgs. On the first play of the drive Havins gained 18 yards the before fumbling the ball-the Pirates recovered. The following two drives were déjà vu all over again. The DevilDawgs forced a Pirate turnover on downs, Havins had a long run and fumbles giving the ball to the Pirates. Perrydale put together a long drive that culminated in a touchdown-the conversion attempt was no good.
The Pirates kick went out of bounds and the DevilDawgs put together a drive featuring runs by Michael Blagg, Gabe Fritts, Raul Anaya, Josh Ward, and Jayden Havins getting the ball to the 1 yard line. With the ball on the 1, Michael Blagg lined up under center and scored on a quarterback sneak up the middle. The conversion attempt was no good. Perrydale responded with a long drive which ended when Caiden Walker caused a fumble the DevilDawgs recovered.
As Sherman was driving the DevilDawgs were penalized for holding, and on the same play a Perrydale player was ejected for fighting. The ejection brought life to the Pirates who got tackles in the DevilDawg backfield on the next two plays, followed by a DevilDawg false start setting up a 3rd and 20. A 15-yard completion to Michael Blagg sets up 4th and 5, a pass to Isaiah Riggs who had a bunch of yards after the catch which brought the DevilDawgs down to the 28 yard line. On the following play Jayden Havins took the ball, found the sideline and scored on a sweep. The conversion pass to Josh Ward was good and the DevilDawgs now lead by 14 with 5:28 left in the first half.
Jacoby Roberts lined up to kick the ball to the Pirates and his kick went through the first line of Pirates. The Pirates didn't have anyone deep, as the ball rolled, Gage Simpson found it first for a successful onside kick by the DevilDawgs. Gabe Fritts had a successful touchdown pass, which was called back due to a blind side block from Isaiah Riggs who pancaked an unsuspecting Pirate defender. The DevilDawgs started the drive over again with a dive by Josh Ward for 4 yards, and then Jayden Havins ran the ball to the 8-yard line setting up a 1st and goal. Fritts took the snap, pitched the ball to Michael Blagg, before taking off on a route. Michael Blagg found a wide open Gabe Fritts in the end zone for a half back pass touchdown.
The first drive of the second half Isaiah Riggs broke came off the end to get a sack and set a positive tone on Defense. The DevilDawgs held strong and forced the Pirates to turn the ball over after an unsuccessful 4th down attempt. The DevilDawg's first drive ended in a Touchdown from Jayden Havins, and a Michael Blagg 2-point conversion run. Sherman/Condon forced fumble and took advantage quickly. Josh Ward ran for 18-yards on the first play of the drive before Gabe Fritts would find the end zone on a quarterback sweep. Fritts would score the 2-point conversion on another quarterback keeper.
With a 36 point lead the there was a running clock for the remainder of the game. Twhe DevilDawgs had most of their younger players in for the remainder of the game. The Pirates were able to find success on the subsequent drive against the young DevilDawg team scoring a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was stopped by Rhyder Smith. Cael Bish nearly scored on the following drive making a beautiful one handed catch, unfortunately he was called for pass interference and the play catch was called back. Neither team would score again, the final score: DevilDawgs 44 to the Pirates 12. Next up the DevilDawgs will host Country Christian-a newcomer to the league-for their homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for Friday October 25th, in Moro, Oregon. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
