Group members are seeking donations of fabric, supplies for quilts honoring veterans
The Condon Quilting Group started in 2021 when Judy Thomsen sent a request to the Columbia Basin Electric Ruralite publication to ask for batting. Not only did people send batting, but they also gave material for quilts, and some even sent quilt tops.
Judy took the material, sorted it in her basement, and asked if there were any quilters out there who would like to help make quilts to give away.
That first year, the new group gave away 54 quilts and afghans to organizations, including Victim's Advocate, Condon Food Pantry, Condon Childcare, and CASA. The afghans were made by Joann Houston from yarn that was also donated to the group. Over the next three years quilts were also given to students, staff and siblings in the small schools of Adel and Plush, to the Summit Springs residents and staff, to the Early Learning Center, to Hopewell, to the seniors of Condon High School and Arlington High School and to the raffle for the 4th of July.
The Friends of Hopewell gave 14 paper bags full of fabric and the group used these fabric to continue to give quilts to many organizations. This past year, it was decided we would like to give quilts to the women and men from our community who have served in the U. S. Military. We are looking for donations of red, white and blue fabric (no knits please), batting, backing or even money to help us reach our goal to present quilts at the 4th of July event next year. Each quilt will be from 60" x 80" up to 72" x 90". Some may be smaller depending on the fabric and pattern used. Each quilt will also require batting, backing and thread to quilt the 3 layers together.
At the present time there are 9 women who are a part of the group: Kim Farrar, Leslie Jamieson, Stephanie Lake, Juli Lantis, Julie Lowe, Cindy Selby, Mary Beth Smith, Judy Thomsen, and Joanne Wickham.
We currently have 30 veterans we would like to honor with a quilt. If you would like to help with our project with piecing, (we will quilt), donating fabric or batting or funds (we are not a 501(c)3 just women who like to quilt and give away quilts), please contact one of our group members or call or text Judy Thomsen at 541-379-0095 if you can help in any way.
