Level 3 Evacuation ordered for Lone Rock in Gilliam County

Lone Rock fire grows to 20,000 acres and threatens life and homes

LONE ROCK, OR (4:40 PM July 14, 2024) — A fire in Gilliam County, Oregon has grown significantly this weekend and area residents near Lone Rock are under a Level 3 Evacuation Order from the Gilliam Co. Sheriff's Office.

An Emergency Alert was sent out by Frontier Regional 911 at 3:58 PM on Sunday, July 14, urging local residents in the town of Lone Rock and those who live nearby to evacuate.

The Memorial Hall in Condon is serving as an evacuation center and will have liquids and air conditioning.

Amid blistering hot conditions near 98 degrees, firefighters could not contain the blaze as high winds under a Red Flag warning created a hazardous situation.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal is mobilizing resources to assist locals battling the Lone Rock Fire. A task force from Linn County and a division supervisor were mobilized early this morning.

The fire sparked Saturday afternoon and burned about 4,200 acres by evening.

Within 24 hours, the fire had grown to 20,000 acres, prompting attention from the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office.

"The task force is an added resource for the local fire agencies that responded to protect the community of Lone Rock and the region," read a statement from the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office.

Firefighters from Gilliam County, the Oregon Department of Forestry, and the Prineville Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have been fighting the fire since it sparked on Saturday afternoon.

The Gilliam County Sheriff's Office ordered the Level 3 Evacuation of the Lone Rock area just after 4 PM on Sunday.

A Red-Flag warning for high winds remains in effect until 9:20 PM on Sunday.
