Condon wins first District Track and Field Championship in 53 years

Men's team takes place in history

The Condon Blue Devils made history last week, as the boys Track and Field Team won the 1A - District 3 Championships held in Maupin. It marked the first District Championship for the Condon Men's Track and Field Team since 1971.

The Blue Devils didn't look back and dominated the competition in Maupin and are well positioned going into the State Track Championships in Eugene this week.

With a score of 84.5, the Blue Devils boys team easily bested South Wasco (68), Trout Lake (65), and the other fourteen competing schools at the 1A District 3 Championships.

The Condon Men's Team found a place on the podium in nearly every event.

In the 100 Meters, Jayden Havins tied for third place, with a time of 11.88 seconds, and also took fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.28 seconds. Havins took second in the 400 meters (53.67) and was followed by sophomore Walker Lathrop (56.16) who took fifth.

Grady Greenwood, who broke several Condon High School records last year, dominated the distance runs. His younger brother Carson also competed and found the podium. Grady Greenwood took first place in the 800 Meters (2:00.43), with Carson Greenwood taking sixth (2:22.20), and Max Wilson in eighth (2:24.95).

Grady also took first in the 1500 Meters (4:11.03), finishing 18 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Freshman Jake Wilson had a strong showing, finishing third (4:31.24). Wheeler High School Freshman Luke Conboy finished sixth (4:47.90). Luke Wilson of Condon finished ninth (4:53.95).

Grady Greenwood did not run the 3000 Meters, but freshman Jake Wilson had an excellent showing, finishing second (9:48.98), followed by Carson Greenwood in fifth (11:44.15).

Walker Lathrop continued to run well in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing fourth (48.70). Lathrop also helped his team in the 4x100 meter relay – with Jayden Havins, Max Wilson, and Kaden Hall working together to finish third (47.42).

In the 4x400, the Blue Devils took first place with Kaden Hall, Carson Greenwood, Jake Wilson, and Grady Greenwood running a personal best 3:42:62.

The team didn't have a competitor in the Shot Put or Discus, but junior Blake Carnine got the team on the board in the High Jump, tying for sixth place (1.53 meters).

Max Wilson and Jacoby Roberts both had personal bests in the Long Jump, and Blake Carnine finished 13th in the Triple Jump.

Every point mattered, and the team's 84.5 points impressed spectators and fans.

While Condon has had some good teams in years past, winning the district championship has been elusive. After taking home first place, the Condon School District's Vice Principal and Athletic Director Teren Humphrey went on a search to find the last district championship.

The Times-Journal assisted in finding information in the 1971 archive. That year, the Blue Devils won the Columbia Basin Track and Field Championship in The Dalles. The 1971 team put up 102 points and was led by Grant Weatherford, Frank Weatherford, Dave Boyle, and John Hoffmann. Together, these four won the 440-yard relay (45.1).

Grant Weatherford set a school record in the Discus (150'3") and Frank Weatherford set a school record in the 880 (2:04.4).

Dave Boyle won the long jump (21' 4 ¾") and low hurdles in 20.9 seconds.

Chris Fatland also was a big part of the 1971 team, finishing fifth place in the 1 Mile and 2 Mile races to get the victory for the Blue Devils.

Coaches for the 2024 team were beaming as the kids took to the podium time and time again.

The Men's Team is eager to take to the track at the glorious Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Six Blue Devils will be headed to Eugene to compete: Grady Greenwood, Carson Greenwood, Jayden Havins, Walker Lathrop, Kaden Hall, and Jake Wilson. These athletes will chase glory in the cathedral of track and field. Hayward Field had a massive remodel in 2020-2021 and has hosted the World Championships and other top tier events in recent years. Before that, Bill Bowerman put the site on the map as head coach at the University of Oregon.

The forecast in Eugene shows sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s to high 60s. Perfect weather for track and field.

Good luck to the Blue Devils Track Team and to all the athletes in the 1A – District 3 division.
