Oregon High School Rodeo action took place May 3, 4, and 5, in Prineville. Once again, the Columbia Basin High School Rodeo Club was well represented.
Condon's Gracie Garthwaite rode to the Reserve All-Around Girls title for the weekend. In the first round of competition, she tied her goat in 8.61 seconds for a second place finish. With Spray's Oran Davis at the heels, they turned in a fourth place time of 10.90. A time of 3.1 seconds earned Gracie 6th in the breakaway roping. She finished her busy day with a barrel racing time of 18.166 for 7th.
Freshman Colt Gronquist, Arlington, roped his calf in 10.77 seconds for fourth place on Saturday. Fellow teammate Reagan Martin of North Powder turned in a pole bending time of 21.776 to hold down 7th place. Wheeler County's Molly Davis rounded out the contingent with an 8th place 12.179 goat tying time.
The second round of competition found Gracie once again leading the club with a third place barrel run of 17.648. She wrapped her goat up in 9.34, good for fifth place. In the breakaway roping, she stopped the clocks at 4.11 to end up sixth. She won the goat tying aggregate for both goes with 17.85 seconds. She also brought home the breakaway average with a total of 7.21.
Reagan Martin won Sunday's pole bending with a time of 21.549. She tied her goat in 9.39 for 6th. Her barrel racing time of 18.234 held on for 9th place. Her placings for the weekend earned her the girls rookie all around title. Her brother Brycen and his partner turned in the third place time of 8.64 in the team roping.
Steer Wrestling action saw Colt Gronquist turf his steer in 10.68 seconds for second place. His calf roping run of 18.13 took 10th place.
Molly Davis and her team roping partner turned in a 7th place time of 15.52.
The weekend before found Colt Gronquist in Prineville for the Central Oregon PeeWee Rodeo Association competition. When the dust settled for the weekend, he had the top spot for the season in calf tying and chute dogging. He was also sitting fourth in the calf roping and team roping for the 2024 standings.
Ione was represented by Tate Turner. As an intermediate boy, Tate is holding down 8th in the double mugging and 7th in the boys breakaway roping. Brother Talon Turner also participated.
The last regular season high school rodeo action will travel to Burns next weekend, with the remaining junior high rodeo competition in Prineville May 16-18. Both divisions will conclude the rodeo seasons with state finals where the top 20 in each event will compete for 4 spots to go to the National Finals.
