Gilliam County Transportation extends office hours, ride availability

Volunteer drivers in Condon and Arlington needed

By Todd Lake

Gilliam County Transportation Director

Gilliam County Transportation (GCT) Department provides for the transportation needs of the people in Gilliam County. We provide public transportation for medical appointments, both locally and in the surrounding communities including Bend, Portland, The Dalles, Hood River, the Tri-Cities areas, and others. Other transportation provided includes trips to the Sr. meal site, food bank, and shopping.

GCT provides transportation services not only to Veterans, Seniors, and individuals with disabilities in our communities, but also to the general population, through a call/request/schedule system. Currently the office is open Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

We are currently exploring the community's interest in re-establishing the Wildhorse Casino bus, for monthly trips to the casino. We are also asking for ideas from the public about other outings that you may enjoy, i.e. sightseeing trips, trips to museums, Maryhill winery or other places of interest, and look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas. Let's see what we can do!

While GCT has some staff to help provide these services, we cannot meet the ever-growing need without volunteer drivers. We recently added two additional vehicles to the fleet, to help with this increased need, and are currently recruiting dedicated individuals who are looking to give back to their community. You can choose to transport people locally or farther distances, once a week, once a month or more. If you are interested in pursuing the rewarding task of volunteering to assist the transportation needs of our community neighbors, please contact the GCT office at 541-351-9545.

Funding for this service is provided by grants through the Oregon Department of Transportation, GOBHI, STIF Funds, and donations.
