OBITUARY: Georgia Lee Hoover Stiles

Well known Roseburg resident Georgia Lee Hoover Stiles passed away on January 18th.

Stiles and her former husband Bill, came to Roseburg in 1961. Stiles was well known for her many contributions to the community through both work and volunteering. She was one of the first women to join the local Rotary Club in 1989. Stiles was later president of the North Roseburg Rotary. Stiles was especially proud of the all-inclusive playground project at River Forks Park, which was her brain-child. It was completed in 2015 after extensive fundraising.

Stiles led 4-H groups, was involved in the PTA, was part of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the P.E.O. and the League of Women Voters.

Stiles was elected as the first female president of the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce in 1979. She was named the female First Citizen of the Year in 1981.

Working as a realtor, she started her own company, Georgia Stiles Realty in 1977. Stiles was active in local real estate for years, before selling her business at age 70. She then became project manager for Seneca sawmill, retiring at age 78.

Georgia Stiles was active outside of work and liked fishing, hiking, cycling and baseball. Her passion was traveling. As an active adventure seeker, she liked to be where history was in the making. That included flying over Mt St. Helens a couple of weeks after the 1980 eruption. Accompanied by a photographer for The News Review along with some family members and friends, that trip led to a giant photospread in the paper a few days later. Stiles traveled to Germany when the Berlin wall was being torn down, and to Russia when it was opening up to tourists. She also traveled to Tahiti, Ireland, Scotland, Mexico and many other countries.

Stiles chronicled her life in her book, “The Postmaster’s Daughter”, which was written in 2012. It covers her life, starting with her birth in The Dalles, on February 14th, 1932.

Stiles is survived her children: Trish and her son Aaron, Fred and his wife Laura, and Susan along with her daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Les, and granddaughters Aurora and Gloria.

A celebration of life will be held February 17th at 11:00 a.m. at the Roseburg Country Club. Georgia Stiles was 91 years old.
