The Portland based reggae band DreadKnot came to Condon on Saturday, August 22 and positive vibrations were in the air. Opening the show was new Condon High School Social Studies teacher James Andrews, who played a solo acoustic performance. Mr. Andrews also sat-in with the Liberty's house band Noteus on saxophone. Mr. Andrews was an AmeriCorps member and taught music with the ETHOS program in Dufur.
Outside, Hood River based chef Garrett Arceneaux brought the flavors of Louisiana to Condon. Mr. Arceneaux is from Thibodaux, Louisiana and said he learned the gumbo recipe from his grandmother. "This is the real deal, great grandma's old recipe" that come from his Cajun roots, he said.
The new owners of the Liberty Theatre are continuing to push for more live entertainment in the venue. Two dozen people filtered in and out of the venue and several groups ate gumbo and nachos on the patio.
Kelly Jo Janes of the Condon Round-Up provided alcoholic drinks to thirsty audience members and an all ages side of the venue was available for younger people.
Event organizer Nick Evans of the Liberty Theatre said that it is a challenge to hold events in the COVID-19 era. Mr. Evans says that he is still feeling things out but said that he was pleased to see people enjoying themselves. "That's what it's all about," he said. "We'll keep working at it and appreciate everyone's support."
