One evening I dropped by to visit my friend Randal Miller who had just pulled a pork roast out of the oven. The delectable aroma greeted me like an airborne welcome mat. My mother used to tell me it was very bad manners to go visiting during the dinner hour but apparently I had forgotten. Randal graciously offered me dinner and it was so delicious I had three helpings. I wanted a fourth but eating like a lumberjack in front of other people is not very ladylike, is it? But...

The news of EO Media Group’s plan to sell the company, or to potentially restructure as a non-profit certainly got our attention. To be honest, it was a scary week. The Times-Journal has been printed weekly by the EO Media Group for decades. We communicate with their staff weekly and depend on them for printing The Times-Journal. We have also looked to the EO Media Group and its many publications as a guide. We have admired their work in sustaining legacy newspapers in E...
Some of my very favorite pantry things are the two bivg boxes of glass jars and bottles that I’ve rescued from the garbage. I clean them up and remove the labels so they are like new. I noticed a long time ago that food lasts longer in glass than it does in plastic. I often decant food that is packaged in plastic into glass containers. Just say NO to random food clutter and all the mismatched packages that don’t seal properly. Those invite staleness and attract bugs, mot...

Sarah Waters was inside the Spray Museum last year when she stumbled on a cookbook that was put together in the 1980s. Inside were recipes and stories of people from the Spray area, many of whom had long since passed away. While flipping through the pages, Sarah recalled her own childhood experiences, and how recipes could tell a story of family and community bonds. So began the quest for Waters to create a Wheeler County Heritage Cookbook. Sarah Waters moved to Spray in...

"She is a pilot herself, so her AIR BABIES commit none of the technical errors so revolting to well-informed children" (A. Earhart, 1936). High praise, that, for a fine children’s book, Air Babies, penned and illustrated by Elvy Kalep, coming from America’s most beloved aviator. Amelia Earhart would depart from Lae, of what was then Papua and New Guinea, just a year later, never to return. Air Babies was published first by The Saalfield Publishing Company in Akron, Ohio, fir...

I love to eat granola for breakfast, the kind stuffed with goodies like nuts, seeds and dried fruit. That is really a crumbly, healthful cookie in disguise! However, the luxurious, loaded-with-nuggets granola typically sold at high-end grocery stores can cost upwards of $15-$17 a pound. A while back, I learned to make granola and after some trial and error now have a reliable recipe that is, of course, easy to make. You can mix and match this recipe to suit your own tastes;...
When Traci and Mike Mordell found and purchased property in Spray, they realized a long held dream of owning and developing a property for their family to enjoy for generations to come. The Mordells purchased the property from Elva Dell McGough in 2006 and began making improvements in 2007. Much to their delight, they moved into a newly rebuilt house in 2008 near Traci's father, Jerry Barber, who had retired to Spray in 2002. The Kahler Basin property they purchased was...
