Deschutes River to remain open to summer steelhead fishing THE DALLES, Ore.—The popular Lower Deschutes River will remain open by permanent rule for steelhead fishing. More than 21,000 unmarked summer steelhead have passed Bonneville Dam since July 1. The Lonerock Fire was brought under control after a harrowing two weeks that tested federal, state, and local fire response. As of press time, the fire is at 77% containment and has burned 137,221 acres. For many local volunteers who worked days on end to protect homes and property, some much-needed sleep and time with family awaits. For firefighters, it is off to the next blaze – as Oregon and Washington are now using half of the nation's firefighting crews. As of July 28, t...
Organizers of the 50th Annual Shaniko Days are excited to welcome people to Oregon's favorite ghost town this Friday through Sunday – August 2nd – 4th. But maybe it's time to drop the "ghost town" title – as the town has seen a significant amount of investment and cultural developments in recent years. There's no doubt that Shaniko used to be a big deal. The little town that sits just off of Highway 97 north of Madras was once a boom town and was positioned to be one of the la...
Once again, it's another hot and dry summer. With this heat, problems can arise within our gardens. We usually remember our lawns, vegetable patches, strawberries, and anything else that we care for. However, one thing often overlooked is our trees. Out of all our landscape plants, trees are probably the most valuable and expensive to replace. Drought stress over several years can lead to sudden tree loss. Careful considerations need to be made for our trees. When it comes to...
The Port of Arlington's A-Town Throwdown 3 on 3 basketball tournament and the Port of Arlington's Show 'N Shine Car Show was held last Saturday. It was a pinch yourself, I might be dreaming kind of day as temperatures hovered in the low 80s with an overcast sky. Both events had a smaller turnout than last year, but organizers were expecting as much due to the wildfires in the area. The A-Town Throw Down 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament was played on the basketball courts by the Po...
The old Condon Baseball field housing development saw a burst of activity in July – as foundations for two more developments were poured and a duplex completed framing and roofing work. A sidewalk was also finished on Jefferson Street. The old baseball field was gifted to the City of Condon from the Condon School District in 2021. The city sold the property, six lots in total, to developer Amy Coy, who built one house and sold the other five lots. The city required d...

Oregon State University Extension is partnering with state and local emergency operations, county fairgrounds, and individuals across the state to solicit hay, livestock feed, and monetary donations. We are also helping to coordinate the transportation of donations to the affected areas in partnership with Oregon Cattleman Association. Hay...
Wow, the fires were intense, weren’t they? They certainly forced many of us to consider what we would take given a moment’s notice and limited space. I guess I’m not the sentimental type because the first thing that came to mind was to grab my cookware. Being able to eat a warm, home-cooked meal at least once a day centers and settles me, no matter how chaotic the world around me gets. One evening during the fires, Randal and I sat on the porch to watch the constant procession...
