  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Katie Garthwaite

    Updated Mar 20, 2024

It’s been just over a year now and I’m still at a loss for words. When I was slapped with this diagnosis of ALS it turned my world upside down, as I just couldn’t believe it was me that this was happening to. I have always been an active healthy person that works hard and just couldn’t believe that I could be sick. The love and support that this community and others have given my family is just truly surreal. I have always loved this small town. I have always been proud to tell people where I grew up! I have often told people...

Ellis Dean McRoberts, 89, passed away peacefully the morning of January 28, 2024 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. Early in the month, he said, "he really didn't want to go, but if it was his time, he would accept it". He was a sweetheart, and his smile will be deeply missed. Ellis and his fraternal twin brother, Arlo, were born on September 27, 1934, to William Thomas McRoberts and Stella May McDandell in Morrow County. Shortly after his birth, William McRoberts died,...

    Updated Feb 26, 2024

1 years ago— Doug Slagle motored up from Salem to watch the Super Bowl with friends Bob and Heather Devine and their daughter Haley. Haley, by the way, is a pilot for Horizon Airlines and is on her way to a new assignment which will have her domiciled at Medford. The Fossil Volunteer Fire Department has been recruiting people to help keep our fire department from totally disbanding. Turn out has been good and interest is being renewed. Even teens who are not quite old enough are showing an interest. This is very e...

  • Don't Go Ask Alice; Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Part Three

    Lawrence J. Hammar|Updated Feb 16, 2024

Go Ask Alice sold millions, but who was "Alice?" How did the publisher get ahold of her diaries? Was the interlocutor really a "child psychologist?" As questions began to emerge in the late '90s, by then, we'd lived through Richard Nixon's "War on Drugs," Ronald Reagan's D.A.R.E. classes and Nancy Reagan's "Just Say 'No'" campaigns. Rick Emerson's Go Unmask Alice (BenBella Books, 2022) took the "bright, shiny object" of Go Ask Alice down a rabbit-hole. Beatrice Sparks, born...

  • Refried Beans 101

    Isabel Montclaire|Updated Feb 16, 2024

Lately I've been reminiscing about riding my paint quarter horse, Quincy, on my friend Lolita's five hundred acre working farm in Hubbard, Oregon. Lolita and I rode most Sunday mornings and we would laugh and say that we were at "The Church of the Horse". Riding with her was a deeply spiritual experience because on every ride we would see sights that were breathtakingly beautiful and the images would stay with me the whole week. For example, on one winter not-a-cloud-in-the-sk...

  • Ten State Senators barred from reelection, upending Oregon politics

    Stephen Allen|Updated Feb 9, 2024

Of the controversial ballot measures that Oregon voters have passed in recent years, perhaps few will be as influential as Measure 113. Unlike Measure 110 that decriminalized drugs and Measure 114 that put restrictions on firearms, Measure 113 was not extremely controversial. But while Measure 110 and 114 look to be struck down or replaced, Measure 113 is likely here to stay. It's impact on Oregon politics are significant. Approved in 2022, Ballot Measure 113 aimed to prevent...
