MORO, OR — On Saturday, January 18, 2025, chess players from three counties in Oregon, and Klickitat County, WA came together at Sherman County School for the Husky Scholastic Chess Tournament. This was the first time that Sherman County School had hosted a U.S. Chess Federation (USCF-rated) Swiss-style tournament, and by all accounts, it was an enjoyable event! Forty-five players from Fossil (Wheeler HS), Hermiston SD, Sherman schools, and Goldendale HS, as well as five homes...
One of the best dining events of the year is right around the corner – the Sherman County Crab & Oyster Feed will take place in Wasco on February 1, from 3 PM to 7:30 PM at the Morrow County Grain Growers building. Typically, the event is a fundraiser for the Sherman County Athletic Foundation, but this year all proceeds will benefit Brennah Miller and Samantha Justesen, two local women that are battling cancer. In a social media post, the Sherman County Athletic Foundation s...
By Cora Munkers, 4-H Student Reporter T-minus 60 some days until we are Costa Rica bound. Time is moving fast as we get closer to our departure date. At the January 5th meeting, President Adam Gibson brought the meeting to order at 12:35. Max Wilson led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and Caydence Wade led the 4-H Pledge. Our Leaders told the group that between can sorting, tree sales, and helping at the Elks Annual Dinner, the club raised over $3,600. Great job...
Days of Yore for January 30, 2025 10 years ago— The Arlington Chamber of Commerce is responsible for the two billboards on I-84. The large honker goose makes the billboards stand out and brings back memories of the days when most everyone enjoyed goose dinner now and again. This writer remembers cooking a goose for company, and it was so tough that no one was able to chew the darn thing! 25 years ago— The lost is found! Molly, the mini-schnauzer mix, lost for 10 days, was fou...
The Sherman County Court held their scheduled session on Wednesday, January 22 and started with an update from Michelle Colby from Mid-Columbia Economic Development District (MCEDD). Colby discussed housing applications that had been submitted to the district and the status of other projects. Like other counties in the region, Sherman County has struggled to offer obtainable housing for newly hired employees in local businesses, community organizations, and local government jo...
No, you don’t, and that might be mold, too; careful. “I’m cleaning out my aunt’s house and wonder what these are worth.” Hard to say, but your pics are upside-down and I see signs of varmint-nesting. “I did my own research, and they’re going for 2K” on eBay!” Except that’s a fake “Stephen King” who has fake-inscribed his own fake-book to his faked self with a faked signature and misspelled his own name. This Wizard of Oz title, however—it might be a keeper. Everyone and thei...
I’m always thrilled when I go into the kitchen and spontaneously create something delicious that I’ve never made before, especially if I used only what I have available in my pantry. In addition to pantry staples, I keep long-lasting fresh or semi-perishable ingredients on hand. Those are foods like aged cheeses and cured meats and vegetables such as cauliflower, green onions, cabbage and squash. It’s easy to get in the habit of making the same familiar thing over and over...
I had the opportunity to do my first “cast and blast” this past weekend. Condon fisherman and occasional painter Kenny Potter took me on a whirlwind adventure to the John Day River on Sunday. I had planned to go out chukar hunting on Saturday, but instead went with Kenny on Sunday in hopes of learning the art of angling. I really enjoy fishing but rarely get out there. A late New Year’s resolution seemed to be in order. I’m glad we went out. Sunday was the better day. The win...

Almost six years ago, Senator Jeff Merkley introduced a wilderness bill that would have transferred 2,000 acres of federal land to the City of Mitchell for economic development purposes. But at the time, the city balked, and the bill collapsed. Now, a new city council and mayor are seeing an opportunity for the tiny town, which has become a thoroughfare for tourists and outdoor recreationalists. Originally known as the Sutton Mountain Recreation Project, it is now being...
The Sherman County Court got an earful from county residents last Wednesday during its regular session meeting in Moro, after a proposed ordinance on setbacks for solar energy projects sparked controversy. More than a dozen letters were submitted to the county court, primarily from landowners in the county, but also from representatives of renewable energy companies and labor unions. The proposed ordinance would create a quarter-mile setback for solar energy projects from...
